The Local Lines for the IBEW Journal have been put off until further notice by the International; so we have decided to add our article here instead.
Hopefully, by now we have ramped back up and have brothers back to work since the abrupt shock to our system that took place back in February and March. The plan was by summer to be working at the old GM site and have some men at the Port of Wilmington. No telling where the economy and the world’s health has turned since late April when this article was penned. As we all know, things can change in the blink of an eye.
Organized labor has found one of our core concepts thrust into the mainstream, and it’s our job to keep it in the conversation as long as we can. By employers providing simple masks, gloves, and a few other precautions, employees could have what they need to do their jobs safely. By not having proper protection, unrepresented and represented workers alike put themselves and their families at risk.
The President of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka seized the opportunity to remind everyone that safe working conditions for ALL men and women of the workforce should not be sacrificed at any expense. Also, from the beginning, he has been adamant about protecting jobs and conditions amid all stimulus frenzy going on in Washington, D.C. It is good to hear smart and strong voices determined to speak out for what they know would surely be lost if they remained silent.
